This version provides lots of properties for many image, music, video, and document file types supported by Windows.

This is the point we’ve wanted to reach since the architectural changes we started in V2. While we wanted to get here sooner, the means of getting this information is radically different between Windows XP and later operating systems. Microsoft improved the mechanism for Windows Vista, but it was incompatible with Windows XP, making the decision difficult given the popularity of XP over Vista. With Windows 7 supporting the same mechanism as Windows Vista, we finally felt confident in using the new methods.

Work for V5 began in November 2010 after a suggestion from a user and entailed the rewrite of the core data gathering facility in the shell extension. The code restructuring in earlier versions, and the flexible XML architecture has allowed the large number of new properties to be handled in the same way as the existing file properties – it's good to see your plans work out when you’re the designer of the software :).
